POSSIBLE FUTURE AMIGAS
- Andrew Chapman
First of all, I'd like to make it clear that what is written here is
neither fact nor rumour; it is simply my own opinions on what some good
Amiga models could be. Repeat - this is fiction, not fact.

AMIGA XPC:
The Amiga XPC (Cross PC) is basically a slightly up-market A-1200 with a
built in PC emulator. From my own experience, the general community is not
aware that the Amiga can be made to be MS-DOS compatible. This leads to
sales of PCs over Amigas because people want to stick with what they know
instead of going for the machine with the better performance. If a PC
owner bought an Amiga XPC they would probably use the Amiga side of things
more and would therefore be 'converted' to an Amiga user (we all know which
is better don't we ??).
COST:
$2000 - 2500
SPECS:
Motorola 68030 / Intel 80386 processors
AGA chipset / VGA graphics hardware
2meg chip and 2meg fast memory
80meg Hard-Disk
High Density Floppy Drive
SCSI-2 Interface
A-3000 style case
AMIGA 2400:
I would personally like to shake Commodore's hand on the release of the
A-1200, but its specs are a touch too low for today's standards. This is
only because they had to keep it's price down, and I'm glad they did. Its
obvious that a higher mid-range Amiga is needed to fill the gap.
Thus the A-2400. A more expandable A-1200 in a box, with some added
extras. I think C= has to move away from the keyboard only style computer
into a box. They are much easier to expand, and they have a better, more
serious image.
COST:
$1500 - 2000
SPECS:
68030 20mhz
AGA chipset
2meg chip and 2meg fast memory
80 meg HD
High Density Drive
SCSI-2 interface.
Thin 'pizza box' style case (similar to Mac LC)
AMIGA 1800:
This is the Amiga to tackle to music world. With the recent arrival of
the Atari Falcon the Amiga is in danger of losing sales to musicians. The
Amiga's sound chip hasn't changed in the slightest since the A-500 way
back. The Atari Falcon has a built in DSP (Digital Signal Processor) chip
allowing it amazing sound capabilities. Although this chip will probably
be available as an upgrade soon, the Amiga line needs a specific musician's
computer. The Atari ST made many sales simply because it has a built in
MIDI port, even though its specs are lower. Come on Commodore get your act
together. This computer could have a keyboard style case, so as to be more
compact and fit in better in a studio situation.
COST:
$1500 - 2200
SPECS:
68030 20mhz
DSP sound chip
MIDI interface
AGA chipset
2 meg chip RAM
60 meg HD
High Density Floppy
SCSI-2 interface
Oh, and Commodore, if you ever make any of these, be sure to send me
one, Thanx.
